Mechanical Engineer-in-Training

About This Job

This position assists Intermediate and Senior Mechanical Engineers, Supervisors, and Managers in the coordination of project execution in accordance with client requirements and objectives, within cost and schedule constraints, and in quality procedures and practices.

Mechanical Engineers in Training assist more senior engineers in the preparation of plans, calculations, and reports. This position works under close supervision and the work is reviewed for accuracy, adequacy, and conformance with prescribed procedures.

Mechanical Engineers In Training receive on-the-job training in various phases of office, plant, and field engineering through assignments. Tasks assigned are simple and routine in nature. Incumbents in this position make few, routine technical decisions within clearly defined procedures and guidelines.


Duties and Responsibilities

Apply principals of Mechanical Engineering to specifications and design of process equipment.

Analyze structures and equipment due to force, thermal, vibration, and impact/shock loads using theory, Code defined procedures and finite element analysis.
Apply practical knowledge and develop a broad base of skills, while contributing to the overall success of Propak’s operations through interaction with a cross-functional team.
Review fabrication drawings.
Perform shop inspections and resolve technical issues.
Assist with resolutions of field Requests for Information (RFIs);


Prerequisites


Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
Eligible for Engineer in Training registration or registered and in good standing with Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)



Experience

Direct work experience is not required, however previous mechanical engineering in oil and gas related facilities is considered an asset
Demonstrated competency in applying principles of mechanical engineering to specifications and design of process equipment is considered an asset
Experience working with ANSYS engineering software is considered an asset


Other

Knowledge of FEA, vibration analysis, and impact/shock related problems
Knowledge of oil and gas or petrochemical facilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

Authority Level

Has the latitude to apply judgment to resolve problems/issues related to work area and projects and make independent decisions within the scope of the position, however, work is supervised and reviewed by a professional engineer.
Issues of a more complex nature or beyond the scope of the position are referred to more senior engineers
The supervisor is readily available for assistance and guidance


Work Environment


Specific Work Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with usual weekday office hours

Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines

Requires the ability to deal with a diversity of people when responding to interdepartmental inquiries

Coping with frequent interruption and changing priorities

Required to attend meetings at other buildings

May involve occasional travel to meet vendors, suppliers, and customers or visit project site visits, often with little notice


Physical Requirements

Requires ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods using a computer, reading manuals, etc.
Manual dexterity for data input, paperwork and use of standard office equipment
Climbing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling when examining equipment

Company-standard PPE must be worn when entering fabrication shops, yards, and project sites.

Walking on uneven ground is to be expected in yards and at project sites
