Strata Clean Energy is seeking a Senior Field Service Engineer with advanced experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), particularly in controls systems, communication protocols, and network integration. This role is critical to the successful commissioning, maintenance, and optimization of utility-scale and C&I battery storage projects across our growing portfolio.
As a key technical resource in the field, you will lead troubleshooting efforts, support commissioning and testing, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system performance, safety, and reliability. Your expertise in energy storage controls and communication systems will help drive the success of clean energy solutions that power a more sustainable future.
Key Responsibilities:
•Lead field service activities for BESS projects including commissioning, testing, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs.
•Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to controls hardware, communication networks, PLC/SCADA systems, inverters, and energy management systems (EMS).
•Work closely with engineering and software teams to implement and validate control strategies and firmware updates.
•Support the integration of BESS systems with solar PV sites and utility interconnection, including Modbus TCP/IP, DNP3, OPC, and other standard protocols.
•Perform root cause analysis of system faults and develop corrective action plans.
•Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, and performance optimizations.
•Mentor junior field engineers and provide technical leadership during complex field operations.
•Document service reports, system configurations, and recommended improvements.
•Ensure compliance with all safety standards, environmental regulations, and operational protocols.
•Travel regularly to field sites (estimated 50–75%).
Qualifications:
Required:
•Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•5+ years of hands-on field experience with battery storage systems, controls, and industrial communication protocols.
•Strong knowledge of SCADA/PLC systems, energy storage inverters, and battery management systems (BMS).
•Proficiency in communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, CANbus, TCP/IP, and experience configuring network devices (switches, routers, firewalls).
•Proven experience commissioning and supporting utility-scale or commercial/industrial BESS and hybrid solar+BESS sites.
•Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to interpret electrical diagrams, logic schematics, and network topologies.
Preferred:
•Experience with OEM platforms (e.g., Tesla, Fluence, Sungrow, SMA, Powin, or similar).
•Familiarity with energy market participation and EMS controls (e.g., frequency regulation, peak shaving, demand response).
•OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, or other relevant certifications.
•Experience working with remote monitoring tools and ticketing systems.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
•Frequent travel to field locations in a variety of weather conditions.
•Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
