About This Job

Summary:

The Engineering Technician III provides advanced technical support in the design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position ensures compliance with Columbus Water Works (CWW) standards, performs detailed inspections and analyses, and serves as a resource and informal mentor to Engineering Technicians I and II. The role may include limited project coordination responsibilities and technical leadership on field-related tasks.

Skills and Requirements:

•

Relevant bachelor’s degree and 2 years of relevant experience. Combination of relevant education and years of experience may be substituted.

•

Advanced construction and civil engineering knowledge as applied to water and wastewater utilities.

•

First aid/ CPR certification, Utility Foreman license, and Level 1B NPDES permit within 1 year of being in the role.

•

Receive and maintain OSHA 10-hour card within 1 year of being in the role.

•

Demonstrated ability to interpret technical plans, regulatory standards, and construction documents.

•

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and provide technical guidance to peers.

•

•

Must possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

•

A Georgia Utility Manager License is preferred.

Responsibilities:

•

Review and interpret engineering drawings and designs to ensure compliance with CWW standards.

•

Ensures construction work is being executed correctly by contractors with the authority to make field changes as needed.

•

Responds to questions and inquiries concerning water and sewer design and related regulations.

•

Evaluates and interprets various types of plans and blueprints concerning water and sewer design requirements and makes recommendations accordingly.

•

Performs detailed water and sewer inspections, testing, and acceptance.

•

Collaborates with engineers, architects, builders, contractors, developers, and customers, providing answers and reviewing various procedures supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

•

Assist in developing preliminary design and documentation, compile cost estimates, material lists, and reports.

•

Observes and enforces all safety rules and regulations.

•

Provide technical guidance to Engineering Technicians I and II; serve as a knowledge resource without formal supervisory responsibilities.

•

Monitor contractor performance and provide real-time recommendations or field adjustments as authorized.

•

Participate in departmental initiatives aligned with CWW’s Purpose, Vision, and Values.

•

Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

•

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, stand, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, climb, balance, or crawl, use hands and arms, talk, and listen.

•

Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.

•

Repetitive movement using equipment is involved.

•

Employee must be able to stand for an extended amount of time at the jobsite.

•

Employee must be physically able to walk several miles during the day.

•

Employee must be physically able to regularly reach overhead.

•

Employee must regularly lift, carry, and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally 25 pounds. Assistance is required for weight amounts above those listed.

Work Environment:

•

Employee will be regularly exposed to moderate or high noise levels, extreme outside weather conditions, uneven, steep, slippery terrain conditions, dusty conditions, and wet and/or humid conditions.

•

The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment operation.

•

Employees will be subject to roadway hazards, i.e., traffic.

•

Employee will be subject to outside hazards, i.e., poison ivy, bees, spiders, dirt, and animals.

•

Employee will be subject to confined areas, i.e., confined spaces, sewer manholes, water vaults, wastewater pits, and/or protected trenches.
