THE ROLE:

As part of Denison’s Closed Mines Group in Elliot Lake, Ontario, the Environmental Technician is responsible for conducting environmental monitoring and collecting surface and groundwater samples in accordance with established procedures. Key responsibilities include preparing samples for shipment to external laboratories, contributing to the completion of technical reports, verifying and entering field data into the environmental database, and performing long-term care and maintenance activities at various projects, primarily at closed mine sites in the Elliot Lake area. Additionally, this position entails adjusting, testing, and evaluating the treatment processes that manage water quality released downstream of decommissioned mine sites, as well as directing flow adjustments.

Using knowledge of environmental procedures, techniques and regulations to complete tasks, the Environmental Technician executes all responsibilities with adherence to company and contractor health and safety standards, promoting a strong safety culture and fostering a sense of community. With solid technical and organizational skills, this individual is a proactive self-starter, capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team to carryout various field monitoring activities and reviewing and analyzing data collected from environmental sampling programs. Additional qualifications and attributes include:

Post secondary education in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, environmental technology, water treatment or related field is required.
Demonstrable experience with water and effluent monitoring, sampling and field level analytical techniques.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, accompanied by a willingness to learn and use other technologies and software as required, specifically EQuIS.
Strong organizational skills with a keen eye for detail and the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
Good interpersonal skills that promote safe, collaborative, and inclusive relationships with colleagues, vendors, and contractors.
Demonstrated technical report writing skills, accompanied by solid verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate, persuade and influence others.
Ability to think critically to effectively evaluate and resolve problems and identify solutions.
Exhibits an uncompromising commitment to always working safely, and reporting and resolving hazards or unsafe conditions immediately.
Willing and able to carry out physical duties associated with this role, including but not limited to being able to lift up to 50 lbs, engage in recurring bending or similar activities, hike several kilometers on uneven ground, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Possession of a Drivers’ License that is valid and in good standing is required.


YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:


Field Data Collection & Analysis:

Collect field data and samples as per the schedule, adhering to internal protocols.
Analyze samples on-site using portable analyzers; process, package, and ship samples in compliance with quality control standards.
Conduct routine dam inspections, including data downloads and field readings.
Perform daily/weekly water level measurements, sampling, and data entry into the Environmental Quality Information System (EQuIS).
Maintain accurate records and logs for water treatment operations, including flow and water level data.


Environmental Monitoring & Compliance:

Assist in waste management, spill cleanup, reclamation, and sediment/erosion control.
Conduct compliance sampling for effluent, water quality (surface, groundwater), air quality, noise levels, and soil/vegetation when needed.
Operate and monitor equipment for water treatment plants, adjusting processes as necessary.
Support environmental inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
Execute groundwater sampling and related field tasks, operating equipment like GPS, data loggers, and gas meters.


Equipment & Field Operation:

Organize and maintain field supplies, including sample bottles, measuring tools, and safety gear.
Operate, maintain, and calibrate field monitoring equipment and testing devices.
Participate in site maintenance, including plant upkeep, dam slope care, and minor repairs.


Documentation & Reporting:

Complete field reports, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) forms, and chain-of-custody documentation.
Contribute to internal/external reports and SOP development.
Assist with performance report preparation, including meter readings and reagent consumption logs.


Health, Safety & Collaboration:

Adhere to health, safety, and environmental protocols.
Work collaboratively with internal teams and external contractors/laboratories.
Ensure tasks comply with company policies, environmental regulations, and best safety practices.


The successful candidate shall:

Perform other duties as assigned.
Carry out the responsibilities of this site-based position on a Monday to Friday schedule.
Participate in on-call support as required.
Understand that sampling and monitoring programs encompass a large physical area in the vicinity of the operation; Operating passenger vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and boats is a requirement for this position.
Be comfortable working independently and at times work in remote locations with a partner.
Understand that this role is subject to background verification checks as part of the pre-employment screening process and as required thereafter in accordance with company policy.
Be legally authorized to work in Canada.
