Who we're looking for

Viacore Edmonton is looking for Health & Safety Officer – Oil Sands to join our team. The Health & Safety Office- oil sands shall primarily be responsible for communicating, engaging, and influencing decision makers and workers to ensure compliance with H&S legislation and regulations. This individual will lead to creating robust mitigation plans and effective recovery systems when incidents do occur to keep our employees from harm.

Essential Functions


1. Guidance, Coaching and Mentorship:

Ensure that health and safety regulations are followed at various client worksites.
Mentoring all levels of employees to ensure their health & safety.
Provide expert advice to field supervisors, lead hands, solution specialists and service managers to ensure their workers’ safety needs are met.
Coaching and guidance on Safe Work Plans, FLHA, Projects, and Job Scoping
Provide guidance & coaching to Solution Specialist on identifying hazards, documenting critical information to prepare employees before they go on site.
Build stronger contractor relationships.


2. Training and Continuous Improvement

Deliver health and safety training, orientation and toolbox talks as required
Audit and adjust employee training effectiveness.
Ongoing knowledge sharing and effective controls via crew talks and safety trainings.
Maintain up to date knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health & safety (OHS) regulations, industry standards and best practices.


3. Audits & Inspections:

Monitor and assess safety equipment and practices, offering guidance on improvement
Identify potential hazards and provide immediate corrective action recommendations to clients.
Conduct, prepare and submit detailed inspection reports on all site inspections
Work closely with clients to understand their specific safety challenges and provide customize solutions.
Promote a safety-first culture across client teams and within Viacore
Provide support during audits and regulatory inspections.


4. Incidents and Investigations:

Ensure investigations are carried out in a timely manner. Participate in these investigations, support the RSO's and recommend any changes that may be
necessary to ensure that the company complies with OH&S regulations.
Maintain integrity of H&S investigations
Hold accountability for actions / inactions of incident reporting and investigations.


Qualifications


Knowledge/Education & Experience:

Holds or is pursuing a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation
Certificate in Occupational health & safety or a combination of NCSO designation plus five years of work experience in oil sands


Skills & Abilities:

Must be able to make decisions impartially and quickly.
Good knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety legislations within Canada.
Ability to effectively communicate and establish credibility, trust, and build relationships with managers, field, and shop employees.
Ability to act professionally and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to act as a role model, a H&S leader who walks the talk, promotes teamwork, and continuous improvement to ensure alignment with the company's vision and critical success factors.
Strong computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft (Excel, Work, Outlook & PowerPoint)
Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics.
Demonstrated ability to create influence and manage change.
Demonstrated record of continuous learning and professional development.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple inspections and projects simultaneously.
Experience with safety auditing, incident investigations, and reporting.
Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaborating effectively within a team environment.
Valid driver's license required, as there will be requirements to travel to various job sites.
