What You’ll Do

The Journeyperson Mechanic – Bulk Explosives Trucks is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of bulk explosives delivery vehicles at a mining explosives site. This role ensures that mobile explosive mixing/pumping units are kept in top working condition and compliant with all relevant Canadian safety regulations. Working in a high-risk environment, the mechanic will perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on heavy trucks and their specialized explosive pumping systems, while strictly adhering to Canada’s safety standards (Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations, Explosives Regulations, CSA standards, and provincial OHS laws) . The position demands a safety-first mindset, technical expertise in heavy vehicle systems, and the ability to work in remote, challenging conditions to support safe and efficient blasting operations.

Preventative Maintenance & Repair:

Inspect, service, and repair bulk explosives trucks and associated pumping/mixing equipment on site. This includes diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on heavy diesel trucks (e.g. engines, brakes, hydraulic pumps) to ensure reliable operation .
Perform regular fleet inspections and preventive maintenance tasks as per the maintenance program.

Troubleshooting & Equipment Support:

Quickly identify and resolve equipment faults or breakdowns in both mobile and static explosive delivery units. This involves fault-finding in prime movers (truck chassis/engines) and explosive manufacturing or pumping systems (e.g. ANFO augers, emulsion pumps).
Ensure all repairs are done efficiently to minimize downtime while maintaining safety.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance:

Strictly follow safe work procedures in an explosive environment.
Verify that trucks are free of explosive materials and properly decontaminated before performing maintenance, to prevent fire or accidental detonation.
Adhere to lockout/tagout procedures and all site safety protocols.
Ensure all work is in compliance with relevant regulations – including the Explosives Act and Explosives Regulations, 2013, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR) for Class 1 explosives, and provincial Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
Assist with periodic vehicle audits and regulatory inspections (e.g. Transport Canada inspections, provincial mining authority inspections) to maintain compliance.

Documentation & Reporting:

Maintain detailed maintenance records, work orders, and inspection checklists for each vehicle.
Ensure documentation meets regulatory and company standards (e.g. recording any work on safety-critical systems, logging inspections required by National Safety Code or provincial regulations).
Communicate findings and required repairs to the maintenance planner or site supervisor and recommend proactive fixes to enhance reliability.

What We’re Looking For Certification:

Inter-Provincial Journeyperson certification as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic is required.

Experience:

At least 3-5 years of experience in heavy truck or heavy equipment maintenance, with strong skills in diesel engine repair, hydraulic systems, and electrical troubleshooting on large mobile equipment .
Experience working on mining or industrial sites, or on bulk explosives trucks/equipment, is highly valued (e.g. 2+ years in a bulk explosives environment preferred).

Licenses:

Valid driver’s license (Class 3 with air brake endorsement required; Class 1 with air preferred) to operate heavy trucks as needed .
An authorized inspector certification for commercial vehicles is considered an asset for conducting in-house safety inspections.

Safety Training:

Current WHMIS certification and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) training are required, to ensure proper handling of hazardous materials and explosives .
Must have completed or be willing to complete site-specific mine safety training and explosives safety orientation (in accordance with the Explosives Regulations and mine policies). Regulatory

Knowledge:

Strong knowledge of regulations and standards governing this work, including the Explosives Act and Regulations, 2013, TDG Regulations for Class 1 explosives, and relevant CSA standards and codes.

Explosives Site Skills:

Completion of any explosive site worker training or blasting safety courses is an asset.
While the mechanic will not perform blasting, having knowledge of how explosives are used/stored on site (e.g. magazine rules, detonator safety) helps in recognizing hazards and working safely around loaded equipment. The mechanic should be able to obtain a certificate of clearance or meet background check requirements for working with explosives as per federal regulations (e.g. NRCan background check for explosives sites).
