Overview

Rhode Island Energy is seeking a talented and experienced

Manager of External Communications

to join our dynamic communications team. This role is ideal for a strategic communicator with a passion for the energy industry and a proven track record in media relations and spokesperson responsibilities. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the company’s public image, managing media inquiries, and delivering clear, consistent messaging across various platforms. Candidates must reside in the Rhode Island area and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment.

Responsibilities

•

Reporting to the Head of Communications, manage external communications strategies, ensuring alignment with the company’s goals and values

•

Develop and maintain strong media relations to enhance the company's visibility and reputation – this includes with local, regional, national and trade media

•

Support social media efforts, including content creation, monitoring, and engagement

•

Craft compelling stories and messaging that highlight the company's initiatives, achievements, and impact to be used in news releases, OpEds, social media posts, and other external communications

•

Collaborate with internal teams to ensure cohesive and consistent communication across all channels

•

Employ a rapid response mindset to manage crisis communications at a moment’s notice and act as a spokesperson when needed

•

Monitor industry trends and provide insights to enhance communication strategies

•

Must be available and willing to work during the company’s storm and emergency response engagements to effectively deliver information to the public

Qualifications

•

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field

•

8-10 years of experience in external communications, media relations, and social media management

•

Excellent understanding of the news media, news cycles, media measurement and media relations strategies

•

Ability to quickly understand and vet potential brand risk and critical issues and create a response strategy

•

Strong written and verbal communication skills

•

Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

•

Experience in the energy industry is a plus

•

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse teams

•

Proactive and responsive in a fast-paced environment
