JOB SUMMARY: The 5th Axis CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC vertical milling machines to produce precision parts in accordance with detailed specifications. The operator will ensure the machine is running efficiently and producing quality parts, while adhering to company safety standards and production schedules.
· Set up CNC vertical milling machines according to specifications, ensuring proper alignment, tooling, and clamping of materials.
· Load materials onto the machine and operate the mill to perform machining tasks such as drilling, tapping, and milling.
· Monitor machine performance during operation and adjust speeds, feeds, or tool paths as necessary to maintain quality.
· Interpret blueprints, sketches, and engineering drawings to determine dimensions and tolerances, as well as the best machining process to achieve the required specifications.
· Verify conformance of machined parts to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and height gauges.
· Conduct first-article inspections and in-process quality checks to ensure parts meet strict tolerances.
· Identify defects or irregularities and make adjustments or corrections as needed to ensure quality standards are maintained.
· Collaborate with the quality control department for final inspections.
· Select and install appropriate tooling (cutters, mills, etc.) for each job.
· Perform routine maintenance on the CNC machine to ensure its longevity and accuracy, including coolant filling, cleaning, and minor repairs.
· Change out worn or broken tools and adjust tool offsets as necessary.
· Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) while operating the machinery.
· Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring materials and tools are stored properly.
· Optimize machining processes to improve production efficiency while maintaining quality standards.
· Document all machine setups, tool changes, and part counts for each job.
· Log into the job via Global Shop when working on work orders to maintain accurate tracking of labor and materials used.
· Communicate with the supervisor or production team regarding machine performance, quality concerns, or any other issues that arise during operation.
· Actively participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities, including workshops, seminars, and certification programs to enhance job-related skills and knowledge, as required.
· Perform all other duties as assigned or required to support the team's goals and maintain efficient office operations.
· Proven experience as a CNC Mill Operator, particularly with vertical mills.
· Ability to read and interpret mechanical documents and drawings.
· Proficient in using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.).
· Familiarity with CNC programming (G-code) is a plus.
· Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
· Basic understanding of shop math and geometric tolerances.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Strong understanding of safety regulations and procedures.
· Physical ability to stand for long periods and handle materials as needed.
· Technical training or certification in CNC machining is preferred.
· Minimum of 3 years of experience operating CNC vertical mills.
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
· The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and maintain a good sense of balance.
· The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
· The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds.
· Specific vision abilities required by this job include good eye-hand coordination, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
· Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): safety glasses and steel toe shoes when on the shop floor.
