Position Summary

The Communications Specialist works with internal subject matter experts and external stakeholders to develop and implement communications strategies for a Company serving customers 24/7/365. The successful candidate will focus on creating and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external partners to develop communication plans and work cross functionally with peers on the Corporate Communications & Marketing team. This position reports to the Manager of Internal Communications or Manager of Public Relations.


Tasks and Responsibilities

Plan, execute, and measure communications efforts in support of CPS Energy’s mission and the company’s safety culture.

Serves as part of the rotating on-call team responsible for expediting communications needs for CPS Energy, a company providing services 24/7/365. Includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
Demonstrate ability to create quality communications materials and adhere to deadlines.
Proactively pitch news stories for internal and/or external audiences.
Collaborate with various internal departments to ensure communications goals are met.
Remains apprised of top industry trends in energy, public relations, internal communications and social media.
Initiate and/or oversee the development of communications materials with consistency and alignment of overall messaging and objectives. Collaborate with consultants and assist in managing agency work.
In collaboration with other Communications and Marketing staff, develop and implement social media content, including coordination of content development.
Serve as a member of the crisis communications team, including developing messaging and strategies to respond to unforeseen issues
Attend Company events or media opportunities, as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Performs other project and process improvement initiatives as assigned.


Minimum Skills


Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Intermediate experience in public relations and communications, and measurable, high-level communications campaigns for previous employers and clients.

Ability to multi-task various critical work assignments in a fast-paced environment in a professional manner.

Well-developed written and verbal communication skills for interaction with all levels of personnel, Board members, media and stakeholders.

General knowledge of project management principles and Associated Press Style.


Effective interpersonal and customer service skills.

Initiative to work independently or as a member of a team, coordinating with others to achieve desired results.

Ability to make recommendations and independent decisions while knowing when to elevate an issue.

Demonstrated ability to develop materials and messaging that reach diverse audiences across multiple communication platforms.

General knowledge of local/regional/national news media landscape and demonstrated ability to shift course with future changes.


Self-directed with proven problem-solving skills.


Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills and the ability to produce fast, accurate, and lively copy.


General knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Experience working as part of a team in a creative and collaborative environment.

Strong planning and analytical skills; ability to assess complex situations, make decisions and manage projects from start to a positive outcome.

Ability to work safely in a variety of locations such as the field, construction centers and the main office.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience in media relations and developing communications for a variety of channels and audiences in a corporate environment, large public entity, utility or a public relations agency.

Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related field from an accredited college or university or extensive experience in related field.


Required Certifications


Working Environment

Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.

Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events late events.


Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking & standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
