The Role

Based at PG&E’s headquarters in Oakland, California, the Director of Executive Protection is responsible for the strategic plan and programs to maintain the highest standard of safety for our CEO, Executive leadership Team, Board of Directors and other high-profile coworkers. The programs will require extensive experience in corporate, residential, event and travel advance work and security. The successful leader will be an expert in security and have extensive experience interacting with high-profile individuals, law enforcement, intelligence agencies and the general public with outstanding presence and diplomacy. The leader will inspire a high performing team to own all executive protection and intelligence programs and train key stakeholders, and ensure our proactive programs and responses to threats maintain the highest standard of safety for protected coworkers.

Reporting Relationship

The Director, Executive Protection reports to the Senior Director, Corporate Security and leads a team of operations, program and intelligence managers. The Director will lead a team of approximately 13 full time professional employees and additional contractors to support the team, as necessary. PG&E has 2,000+ physical sites across 70,000 square miles of our service territory, and executives travel frequently outside of the service territory.

Department Overview – Executive Protection

PG&E’s Executive Protection Organization is part of the Enterprise Protection organization committed to addressing evolving threats and complex cyber and physical security risks. We seek to continually improve our services through strategic deployment of our resources, standardizing security practices and policies, and reinforcing and promoting security awareness across the enterprise.

Our Executive Protection organization leads our efforts to detect, monitor, and respond to physical threats and attacks. It is critical to ensure that high-profile, public facing coworkers, executives, and members of the Board of Directors are safe and secure through proactive intelligence analysis, threat assessment, and physical security programs. Once risks are identified and prioritized, we develop and activate mitigation plans to protect our coworkers.

Key Responsibilities Direct and oversee the development of executive protection policies and procedures, and mechanisms to mitigate safety and security risks, while safeguarding the personal safety of coworkers and executives in both PG&E service territory, residential, events, and all travel. Direct and oversee the development the executive protection security strategy and business plans, including the identification of protection goals, and managing company objectives and metrics for a complex strategic enterprise-based executive protection organization. Establish department strategy / direction and roadmap to ensure the executive protection department’s mission and goals are met. Consult and partner with executives, Board of Directors and identified key stakeholders such as administrative assistants, company spokespeople to develop security and risk mitigation strategies aimed at reducing PG&E’s risk profile. Ensure best in class protection levels for the organization and government compliance. Direct the development of communications strategy, executive security briefings and training programs as appropriate highest levels of leadership and key stakeholders. Define the operating model and manage third party contracts for a variety of technology and physical security vendors who safeguard the physical safety of employees and visitors. Direct and oversee the department’s development and implementation of the organization strategy. This includes recruitment, growth, and retention of qualified personnel able to support the executive protection mission. Direct and oversee the monitoring and assessment of security threats that may impact company operations and masterfully communicate this intelligence to appropriate coworkers in a timely manner. Collaborate closely with internal PG&E investigations team and act as the liaison for law enforcement-based activities and engagement both on the State and Federal Leve. Oversee and maintain the executive protection budget, including budget setting, forecasting, and expense and capital budget monitoring. Manage funds appropriately to best resource executive protection organization. Develop programs and key initiatives that enhance PG&E’s security profile. This includes asset management, risk-based initiatives, auditing and compliance programs, penetration testing, threat metrics management, and communications security initiatives.

Compensation

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle of the range ($241,000), the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is: Bay Area Minimum: $178,000

Bay Area Maximum: $304,000

Background Qualifications

Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience 10 years of security experience 5 years of corporate security or law enforcement experience 5 years of leadership experience managing people.

Desired Law enforcement experience working for an agency such as the FBI, Secret Service, Department of State, Homeland Security, State and/or local law enforcement Professional Certification – e.g., FBI National Academy Graduate Certified Protection Professional Valid California Driver’s license. Experience in overseeing and directing training programs on security topics, creating security compliance policies and procedures, and administering such regulations company-wide. Must have expert knowledge of criminal law, rules of evidence, search and seizure and criminal prosecution Substantial knowledge of specialized equipment associated with investigative methods Ability to develop consensus within an organizational climate of diverse operational activities and often conflicting regulations imposed by agencies with regulatory jurisdiction Ability to effectively communicate within all levels of the organization including executive management regarding the status of security issues. Knowledge of civil law, and personnel/labor law sufficient to properly direct the activities of the Security Staff Working knowledge of concepts involving psychology and human behavior Knowledge of the operation and capabilities of alarm systems, circuit television, visual monitoring equipment and other anti-crime devices Understanding and working knowledge of electronic counter- surveillance.
