Summary:

EverWind Fuels is embarking on a Clean Energy Project that will create Nova Scotia’s first green hydrogen production facility and unlock the potential of Nova Scotia’s green economy. In addition to the Point Tupper Clean Energy Project, EverWind operates the Point Tupper Terminal which has 7.5 million barrels of storage capacity and specializes in storage, blending and transshipping of petroleum and petrochemical products.

Reporting to the Facility HSE Manager, the Environmental / Safety Technician will be responsible for supporting HSE programs. As an Environmental Technician, the employee will be responsible for all facets of environmental monitoring & sampling, environmental response programs, and coordination of hazardous & non-hazardous waste disposal. As a Safety Technician, the employee will assist in the development, delivery, and administration of HSE programs.


Education Requirement:

Post-secondary education in a related discipline.
Certified professional environmental and/or safety designation is an asset.
Willingness to participate in additional formal education programs supported by EverWind.
Additional emergency response certification is considered an asset, such as:
Canadian Coast Guard – Marine Spill Response Operations Course (MSROC)
Medical First Responder Certification and/or Advanced First Aid
Pro-Board-Certified Firefighter NFPA - Level 1
Pro-Board-Certified Hazardous Materials Operations, NFPA 472
Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement


Experience Requirement:

A minimum of 3 years of related experience.
Must have excellent verbal, written and communication skills.
Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point required.
Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning and organization skills along with the ability to work independently.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to proof work for accuracy.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical evaluation skills.
Capable of taking initiative and making decisions.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations and risk assessment processes.
Knowledge of environmental and occupational health and safety management systems, such as ISO 14001 and CSA 45001 is an asset.
Knowledge of root cause analysis methodologies is an asset.
Previous experience in the oil/gas industry and/or a marine oil terminal working environment is an asset.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.


Major Accountabilities:

Perform all functions safely when complying with Terminal and Provincial regulations, procedures, and policies.
Act as a member of the terminal Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Quicky respond to emergencies, including those outside of regular working hours.
Work with IT and/or outside consultants to improve the effectiveness of existing HSE monitoring and reporting tools and assist with the design of new tools as required.
Provide support to HSE Manager, other HSE personnel, and all Terminal personnel for HSE programs.
Complete checks, sampling, data and reporting process for: site outfalls, well and stream, domestic water and domestic water filtration system and remediation wells.
Coordinate the Terminal’s Transportation, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF) program including completion of waste manifests and Ontario RPRA registration.
Coordinate the following programs: MSDS/SDS, Asbestos Waste Management, Lead Paint Management, Water Treatment Systems, Domestic Waste, and Spill Response Equipment.
Work with tank cleaning contractors to coordinate temporary storage and disposal of waste streams.
Perform annual compilation and submission to the National Pollution Release Inventory (NPRI) program.
Maintain the Terminal’s hazardous & controlled waste holding facility and coordinate the periodic shipment of generated waste to approved TSDF facilities.
Coordinate the Terminal’s Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (OPEP) in compliance with Transport Canada regulations and guidelines. Including the coordination of annual Oil Handling Facility (OHF) equipment inspection and OHF Response Exercise.
Coordinate the Terminal’s Oil Pollution Prevention Plan (OPPP) in compliance with Transport Canada regulations and guidelines.
Participate in oil spill response activities and act in an assigned capacity in an incident command structure.
Coordinate the Terminal’s Environmental Emergency Plan (E2) in compliance with Environment Canada regulations and guidelines. Including the coordination of E2 Plan drills and exercises.
As a Safety Technician, assist the HSE Manager and other departments as a resource to:
Perform safety tours and work observation checks throughout the Terminal to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
Act as Secretary for the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC), assist department managers with monthly safety meeting program, and lead the JOHSC annual inspection program.
Lead or assist with root cause analysis of significant near misses and incidents.
Coordinate the Terminal’s Incident Management System (IMS) and lead incident review meetings.
Act as administrator for the following: Compliance Calendar, Learning Management System, and Employee & Contractor Orientation Programs.
Assist in the development and updating of HSE documentation, such as: hazard analysis forms, procedures, processes, risk-specific prevention plans, alerts, lessons learned, etc., and associated training material with a goal to ensure consistent and meaningful documentation and communication to all users.
Assist in the development, updating and delivery of safety and emergency response training programs.
Coordinate the Terminal’s Fire Pre-Plan in compliance with the Nova Scotia Fire Marshall, NFPA, and Insurance Industry guidelines.
Assist in annual safety and emergency response equipment inspections.
Perform other duties as required.


Work Environment:

The employee must be physically prepared to work in outdoor environments in all weather conditions. May be required to travel for business purposes. Must be able to wear PPE including SCBA/respirator, fire retardant clothing, hearing and eye protection, head protection, steel-toed shoes.


The employee may be required to:

Stand; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Lift up to 50 lbs or drag and/or move up to 100 lbs.
May climb tanks up to 100 ft or work on jetty above water (approx. 40 ft over water).
Walk up to 2 miles at a time and be able to enter above ground storage tanks through man ways that are 24 inches or larger.
