The Marathon Dickinson Renewable Facility has an opening for an Environmental Specialist – This position will focus on waste and wastewater compliance and will assists with the overall environmental compliance at our Dickinson, North Dakota location. This position will ensure compliance with federal, state, and county rules and regulations related to hazardous and non-hazardous waste and wastewater. The position will be responsible for interacting with regulatory agency inspectors during inspections/audits. This position will gather environmental data for interpretation and/or maintain regulatory compliance standards and maintain required permits and plans and communicate all regulatory issues to facility personnel. The position will be responsible for preparing and reviewing permits & reports, investigating complaints and non-compliant issues, gathering data, interpreting the data, and making compliance determinations. This position will interact with the Environmental, Safety, Operations, Maintenance and Engineering staff at the Facility, as well as suppliers in implementing cost effective and innovative environmental prevention solutions to reduce environmental liabilities at the site.

Key Responsibilities* Ensure that all environmental related activities are completed with adherence to environmental federal, state and county regulations.
Prepare regulatory reports and coordinate fee payments associated with environmental compliance.
Provide assurance and verification for environmental compliance Respond to Notices of Violation (NOV), Letters of Apparent Non-Compliance (LOAN) issued by regulatory agencies for potential non-compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Work with contractors to ensure low cost, environmentally compliant and operationally efficient environmental processes are in place.
Provide oversight/direct supervision to contractors, audit contractor activities and approve labor and equipment charges.
Assist in managing the environmental budget for the facility. Approve, allocate and coordinate invoice payments for environmental spending.
Evaluate waste for proper identification, handling and disposal site. Prepare profiles, manifests and other waste shipping documentation.
Lead for waste minimization, pollution prevention and recycling programs at facility.
Point of contact for agencies on required reports, payments and inspections.
Interpret and incorporate new regulations as they relate to current facility waste and wastewater practices.
Develop and maintain procedures and compliance plans for waste and wastewater related activities. ensuring that Environmental Procedures are kept current and accurate.
Communicate environmental requirements to contractor staff, operations and maintenance.
Interact with facility maintenance groups to ensure proper management of waste and materials. Coordinate coverage of these groups during periods of high activity including capital projects and turnarounds.
Perform emergency response activities such as release notification, reporting, and agency discussion.

Education, Experience and Skills Minimum Qualifications* High School Diploma or GED required with 5 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or bachelor’s degree in a HES related field with no relevant environmental experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with no relevant environmental experience

Ability to monitor compliance with environmental regulations.
Ability to develop business acumen and technical knowledge.
Must be team-oriented, self-motivated, detailed oriented, and have good organizational and time management skills. Must have good analytical and problem solving skills. Must be adaptable working in a fast paced and constantly changing environment.
Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the facility (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)
Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications:* High School Diploma or GED required with 10 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or bachelor’s degree in a HES related field with 5 years relevant environmental experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 2 years relevant environmental experience.

Two years of Environmental Specialist experience in a refinery, Petro-chemical or other large manufacturing environment is preferred.
Knowledge of Federal RCRA & North Dakota (State and Local) Environmental Waste and Wastewater regulations. Must be able to read/decipher environmental regulations and have good verbal and written communication skills to explain the requirements to others.
Experience in project management and supervision of contractors at a refinery or large manufacturing facility is preferred.

The Safety Supervisor plans, manages, and directs the activities of the Safety Group’s Employees. This position directs the development, implementation, and ongoing oversight of the entire suite of safety programs and procedures required by either regulation and/or the Company. The Safety Supervisor supports Marathon’s commitment for continuous improvement of Environmental, Health, Safety and Security performance. The Safety Supervisor evaluates personnel and fosters the technical safety knowledge, safety leadership, and career development of their staff. The position will be assigned to Mandan, however approximately 40% of the total work hours will be dedicated to supporting the Dickinson Renewable Facility.* Ensure compliance with safety regulations, refining industry practices, and MPC initiatives by developing and supervising the implementation of safety policies and procedures, implementing corporate safety initiatives, and evaluating compliance with safety policies and procedures applicable to the Area Teams, Projects, and TAR.

Maintain a thorough working knowledge of refinery processes, engineering controls, administrative controls, injury & illness controls, and new safety developments that will impact the refinery.
Provide timely and accurate guidance to ES&S leadership and leaders of the areas they support on all safety matters impacting their areas of responsibility.
Supervise and support Safety Group Employees through setting annual goals (Max V) and objectives including mentoring/coaching, providing development opportunities, conducting performance workbook reviews and annual evaluations, and assisting in the department hiring process.
Provide Safety Group Employees with the required tools and resources to accomplish department goals, including utilization of corporate safety resources, consultants, and contractors to facilitate solutions to complex safety issues.
Strategically distribute Safety Group’s workloads and ensure that programs and project deadlines are met. Maintain assigned workloads in a flexible environment to meet the changing needs of the refinery or regulatory mandates
Support the ongoing implementation of the SAFETY1, Safety Leadership program to build and sustain a strong personal and process safety culture.
Communicate expectations to Safety Group and evaluate individual performance versus expectations to determine the areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. Apprise personnel of their performance status in a timely manner.
Coach and mentor Safety Group in development of communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills so that appropriate work relationships can be developed for customers, consultants, contractors and other work associates to assist in championing safety programs and initiatives.
Direct Safety Professionals to develop and deliver safety training based on new safety policies, procedures, and initiatives.
Oversees Emergency Response Team

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:* Bachelor’s in Safety or equivalent degree preferred

4-10 years related work experience
Knowledge of refining and corporate safety procedures
Strong interpersonal skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Valid drivers license required

Pay Min/Max:

$90,700.00 - $156,400.00 Salary
