Location


This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities


The Executive Director of Safety and Health is responsible for delivering safety performance and fostering a strong safety culture within the company. They develop and implement comprehensive safety and health programs, standards, processes, and procedures that ensure a safe and productive work environment across various areas. This position will formulate and execute a comprehensive safety strategy that aligns with the organization's goals. Additionally, this position will ensure compliance with state and federal occupational workplace regulations, such as Occupational Safety & Health (OSHA) standards, by clarifying these rules.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Ensure effective reporting on safety performance during regularly scheduled Executive and Department daily, weekly, and monthly operating reviews. Reporting topics include injury updates, high energy incidents, problem-solving updates, corrective action status, and Corporate Safety program updates.
Lead communications with regulators, industry trade groups, and peer utilities to maintain relationships and share best practices.
Ensure operational units possess the necessary information, skills, and tools to meet compliance requirements and address clarifications for day-to-day inquiries.
Lead the development and maintenance of programs and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA/MIOSHA standards.
Ensure the effective execution of formal and informal problem-solving related to high and low-risk safety incidents and trends, including safety observations, good catches, stop-the-jobs, and non-recordable injuries. Generate, plan, schedule, and monitor progress of problem-solving and corrective actions to ensure timely completion.
Oversee the application of Safety/Health regulations, standards, and procedures by recommending and implementing changes within the department, representing the company and its procedures, and providing safety guidance to leaders at all organizational levels.
Oversee the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive assessments to identify opportunities for improvement in control and compliance.
Set the vision and establish progressive risk-based programs designed to anticipate, prevent, and mitigate health or safety hazards. Maintain and promote company safety training and education programs that enhance awareness of risks associated with employee and contractor activities.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Strong leadership with a proven track record in building and leading Leaders & Teams.
Experience fostering collaboration and mutual trust and respect within teams, across organizations, and with unions.
Exceptional communication skills (written, oral, presentations, interpersonal).
Exposure to human performance methodology (HPI).
Ability to influence outcomes effectively.
Knowledge of OSHA and MIOSHA regulations and safe work practices.
Capability to lead and execute change initiatives.
Proficiency in Lean tools and concepts, including problem solving.
Understanding of utility operations.



Education & Experience


Bachelor's degree with twelve (12) or more years of experience in an energy/utility safety role.
OR Associate’s degree with fourteen (14) or more years of experience in an energy/utility safety role.
OR High school diploma with sixteen (16) or more years of experience in an energy/utility safety role.
