Detroit Thermal seeks a Metering Technician for its steam distribution maintenance department. Provide skilled and semi-skilled labor with little supervision either in the field or workshop installs, rebuilds, tests, repairs, adjusts, and calibrates mechanical and electronic steam metering and monitoring devices and related steam line and control equipment, including serial and radio telemetry systems. Inputs data into trending software for the purpose of consumption and performance analysis. Calculates steam consumption and performance for use in preparing customer billing during irregular and unmetered periods of use. Locates and corrects faulty operation of customer's steam equipment and heating system permissible under Company regulations.
Roles and Responsibilities
•Carries out verbal and/or written operating orders and instructions of Metering Manager Diagnoses, compensates, and corrects various operating conditions on metering equipment.
•Reads and interprets operating procedures, operating orders, blueprints, and sketches, etc.
•Must be able to respond to customer input without creating liabilities for the customer or company.
•Inspects assigned metering equipment for efficiency and safety. Looks for defects in equipment, faulty operating, poor housekeeping, fire hazards, unsafe working conditions, etc., and takes corrective action, as necessary. Troubleshoots assigned metering equipment. Recommends and assists in developing changes in operating procedures.
•Keeps Metering Manager informed of status of equipment and conditions and prepared repair requests as needed.
•Plans, coordinates, and performs or directs the Lock-out/Tagging-out operations on distribution and customer equipment.
•Performs and/or directs others to perform the operating care and minor maintenance on distribution or customer equipment such as, cleaning, lubricating, changing oil, brushes, packing valves and pumps, changing water glasses, filters, cleaning burner tips, replaces sections of threaded pipe, valves, fittings, etc.
•Reads and records data from various customer meters. Maintains files of operating and work orders, lubrication records, etc. Fills out necessary records, reports, changes charts, etc.
•Assists in developing and preparing JIT's: Trains Customer Service Metering Technicians as requested.
•Uses computer terminal to process work request/work orders to obtain and enter information on the performance of maintenance duties.
•Assist other departments in the company or vendor representatives with the repair of distribution and customer equipment.
•Must know, practice, and comply with all Company safety and health policies and procedures applicable to work being performed. Furthermore, must write Safe Job Procedures when requested
•Inspect Company vehicles prior to operation to maintain Safe operation and avoid trouble and delays during scheduled work
•Quickly respond to emergency call outs.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Tasks):
•Assist other employees of any classification and any department as directed.
•Assist and fill in positions for others as directed
•Perform other work as directed.
•Continue educational growth by attending Company sponsored classes, learning new skills to advance to the next step in the JIT progression
•Assist with the training of other personnel in JIT program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
•High school graduate or GED.
o Preferred: Associates degree or technical school in S.T.E.M.-related field.
o Mathematics: arithmetic, basic algebra and trigonometry.
o An understanding of thermodynamics principles a plus.
o Must pass company skills test to obtain this position.
o Must possess essential (basic) Windows and web-based computer skills.
o Must possess a working knowledge of MS Office Suite: Higher skill levels in Excel, Word and Outlook
•Must have good eyesight {able to distinguish colors), hearing, and manual dexterity.
•Operate basic hand and power tools safely and effectively in pipe connection and small electrical settings
•Must have the ability to work independently or alongside others as part of a team.
•Must have valid State Driver's License, be insurable through Company policy and the ability to operate a manual shift vehicle.
•Must be able and willing to work in a variety of environments, such as cold weather, confined spaces, high areas, areas of increased temperature and humidity.
•Must be capable of heavy lifting (30#), climbing steps, ladders, and scaffolding.
•Must be able to stand for long periods and perform repetitious tasks.
•Must be willing and able to work any given shift, at any DTLLC location and be available for emergency callouts when needed.
•Must have a good mechanical aptitude, be able to read precision measuring equipment, and have a skilled use of hand tools.
•Must be able to perform given tasks with little supervision.
•Must present a good company image when dealing with visitors, customers, and vendors.
•Conduct daily Job Hazard Assessments (MA) and train, correct and/or communicate problems to employees and management
