Experienced Relief Chief Engineers oversee the Engineers and Oilers when the Dredge Chief is unavailable or on time off. They are responsible for maintaining the dredging machinery as well as the support equipment, which includes tender boats, anchor barges, and crane barges. This role requires availability to travel to different dredges based on crew needs and the ability to assume leadership within those engine rooms.
Essential functions (This is not all-inclusive)
•Upholds the Company’s commitment to an injury-free workplace; leads and models safe work practices
•Follows all safety rules and regulations as well as all company policies and procedures
•Works safely around machinery; observes and instructs others in proper equipment use; uses/wears all required PPE
•Ensures team members are provided a safe work environment and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies Directly supervises the day-to-day engine room operations, crew operations, and maintenance on the dredge
•Schedules engine room crews and shifts, and promptly reports to the HR department regarding disciplinary concerns, including poor work performances, absenteeism, and tardiness
•Oversees and manages activities of vendor repair crews on the dredge
•Manages the computer-based vessel level preventive maintenance management program, including maintenance and inventory documentation and record-keeping (training provided)
•Assigns and supervises all activities of engine room crew, including Booster Operators
•Ensures proper orientation, familiarization, and mentoring for new crew members. Evaluates the performance of subordinates and recognizes, develops, and promotes talented crewmembers
•Mentors all crewmembers and promotes safety awareness in all operations. Leads pre-shift meetings, Job Safety Analyses, and safety walks on the dredge and attendant vessels
•Coordinates vessel maintenance operations with Captain and Project Management staff; coordinates and communicates equipment issues with the Dredge and Maintenance Managers
•Conducts emergency drills as required by the US Coast Guard and keeps accurate records
•Ensures the vessel meets all regulatory requirements and is properly prepared for agency inspections
Minimum Qualifications
•High school diploma or equivalent
•Five or more years of experience in marine engineering, including supervisory experience; dredging experience is a plus
•Excellent safety, mechanical, and leadership skills
•Shipyard and/or vendor coordination experience is required
•Working knowledge of electrical systems i.e. motor controls, DC drives, circuits, etc.
•USCG Licensed Chief Engineer of steam and/or motor vessels preferred
•Proficient computer skills and maintaining information databases
•Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
•Trained in Lock/Out Tag Out Procedures, Fall Arrest, Confined Space, and Ladder Safety (on-the-job training also provided in these areas)
•Ability to meet physical requirements of the position as outlined in the Functional Job Description
•Must be able to successfully pass all pre-employment testing (drug test, fit test) in addition to random drug and alcohol testing
