Job Title: Thermoplastic Testing Engineer Job Location: Asbury South Plainfield R&D Center (South Plainfield, NJ)
The Thermoplastic Development Engineer will support analytical testing and generation of lab scale samples including polymer thermoplastics, chemicals and powders. Supports the work of the analytical lab in the below areas:
· Responsible for running and maintaining the polymer extrusion tool(s) and application test equipment.
· Responsible for running and maintaining some of the analytical lab equipment including: XRD, XRF, ICP-OES, particle size analyzers, SEM/EDS
· Proactively supports safety, cleanliness, and organization within the laboratory by identifying unsafe operations and seeking to improve the lab’s overall environment.
· Develops and implements Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Lab Hazard Reviews to ensure compliance with safety standards.
· Designs and conducts experiments on polymer compounding and analytical equipment, compiles data and interprets results into clear, well-structured reports or presentations.
· Operate and maintains various laboratory equipment (e.g., TGA, EDX, microscopes, mechanical testing, mixing equipment, extruders, Carver press).
· Conducts preventative maintenance and calibration on lab equipment and facilitates repairs as needed to ensure functionality.
· Manages inventory and orders materials to support projects.
· Handles and labels chemical containers with proper safety identification.
· Applies knowledge and creativity to solve technical problems encountered during experiments.
· Collaborates with team members and supervisor to ensure the timely and accurate completion of assignments and team goals.
· BS degree in Chemical engineering, Material Science or related technical fields.
· Strong mechanical skills with hands-on experience in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining laboratory equipment.
· Excellent communication skills and highly detail- oriented.
· Self-motivated with the ability to perform tasks independently with minimal supervision.
· Clear and transparent communication skills with team members and the lab manager.
· Hands-on experience with polymer compounding tools such as extruders, roto-molding, injection molding, and compression molding highly preferred.
· Experience with analytical lab equipment like ICP-OES, FTIR, SEM-EDX, XRD, XRF, TGA, DSC, particle size analyzers, tap density, and UTM stress-strain testing tools.
· Experience with wet chemistry (acids, bases, solvents).
· At least 3 years of relevant laboratory experience working with tool operation in the chemical, or other technical materials fields.
· Ability to identify mechanical issues and perform maintenance (e.g., cleaning, lubricating, and replacing parts).
· Experience with calibrating and adjusting machinery to maintain consistent quality.
Chemical and Powder Lab Processing Facility. Must be able to wear different PPE including respirators (such as N95 and higher).
