The Opportunity:
Enel is seeking a creative, passionate, and highly motivated transmission planning engineer to join our team in the role of Transmission Manager. Candidates must be able to apply their knowledge of transmission system modeling and analysis, criteria, policy, and regulation in order to manage the interconnection process for utility-scale renewable energy projects (wind, solar, energy storage,
geothermal, and hydro). Candidate will be expected to develop technical modeling data, diagnose transmission study results, identify key risks and opportunities, and create positive change through advocacy and, when necessary, litigation. The team’s work on generation interconnection represents a critical and highly competitive aspect of renewable energy development and the team’s recommendations support key project investment decisions for the company across the US and Canada portfolio.
Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills in order to provide accurate and timely feedback to the team and to build relationships with utilities and RTOs that lead to improved policies and project results.
What You'll Do at Enel North America:
Responsibilities, include, but not limited to:
•Manage daily interconnection process activities for various utility-scale wind, solar, energy
•storage, geothermal, and hydro projects from site selection through operation, with a primary focus on the development phase.
•Determines optimum strategy for interconnecting projects to the electric grid based on system impact assessments and market delivery options. Use analytical tools and methods to determine optimum plan for interconnection.
•Leverage knowledge of tariffs, transmission agreements, and transmission policies to evaluate and recommend project strategies and opportunities.
•Assesses actual grid capacity in a region by reviewing and verifying technical studies performed by transmission providers and communicate and negotiate with regional transmission providers to develop the most efficient and cost-effective plan for integrating the project into the electric power grid.
•Coordinate the development of necessary modeling data with multi-disciplinary team for
•generation interconnection technical studies for submission to Utilities.
•Participate in several committees including technical and policy based to advocate for and
•influence the decisions which are favorable for renewable energy projects.
•Perform Transmission Planning engineering studies and related functions within the North
•American Business Development group responsible for evaluating and developing electric
•transmission solutions with associated or complementary transmission services, as
•Perform all computer modeling necessary to conduct power flow and stability studies in support of Business Development opportunities and evaluation.
•Utilize a team approach to ensure consistent and thorough analysis in transmission planning studies and analysis.
•Research available technologies and incorporate innovative thinking into the development of comprehensive solutions.
•Perform due diligence on interconnection process for late stage projects to adequately estimate timing and cost impacts, and provide guidance to origination, development engineering, and finance.
•Document study findings and prepare and defend recommendations
•Prepare and/or be a key contributor in developing project proposals.
•When necessary, manage engineering consultants’ work required to augment or complement various aspects of the projects.
•Work in a project team environment interacting with individuals with various technical specialties and industry experience.
•Fulfill a lead technical role to help ensure we are pursuing the best potential projects in a very timely manner.
•Resolve technical issues that may arise in different phases of a project development.
Who You Are:
•Must be passionate about the growth of sustainable energy technologies and advancements.
•Creative problem-solving mindset with constant self-initiative to improve projects.
•Ability to tackle complex problems with many unknown variables and use data and research to make recommendations on key business decisions
•Ability to interact with company personnel, external engineering firms, regulatory representatives, and ISOs representatives in a positive, team building manner.
•Knowledge of transmission tariffs, specifically interconnection procedures, strongly preferred.
•Knowledge of transmission planning standards and criteria of NERC and one or more Regional Entities
•Experience participating in RTO/ISO regions’ working groups.
•Knowledge of power systems: Protection system operation and reliability philosophy, Utility
•system practices, Three-phase power system theory/operation both static and dynamic, Short circuit theory/application, Motor generation theory/application, Reactive compensation theory,
•Substation configuration/construction/maintenance techniques, Transmission line
•configurations/design/maintenance techniques, Outage planning, and Congestion philosophy and analysis.
•Familiarity with ANSI standards, NESC, and IEEE standards is a plus.
•Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
•Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited engineering school required.
•Emphasis on power systems strongly preferred.
•Master’s degree focused on power systems and/or Master of Business Administration Degree are beneficial.
•generation interconnection studies and processes.
•Experience in power flow required; short circuit and transient stability analyses experience
•strongly preferred. PSS/E, MUST, TARA, ASPEN and/or PowerWorld experience required.
