Job Description:
General Objectives:
The Mine Geologist is a salaried exempt position and typically works a four-day workweek offset from other personnel to provide up to 7 days/week coverage for this role. The role works to achieve operational targets within technical areas, directly impacting the department's overall achievement results. Responsible for making adjustments or recommended enhancements in systems and processes to solve or improve the effectiveness of technical areas. The position communicates with contacts within the Geology department on matters that involve obtaining or providing information requiring some explanation or interpretation to reach an agreement. The mine geologist assists with all aspects of production geology, including but not limited to geologic mapping, geologic interpretation, near-mine reconnaissance, sampling, aerial photography, and ore control. The position requires using Blast Movement Monitoring technology and drone surveys of pre and post-blast surfaces. This position will assist engineers in completing daily, weekly, month-end, annual, and other various mine production and reconciliation reports.
Key Areas of Responsibilities & Duties:
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the
following:* Developing and implementing blast hole/ore control programs that reconcile well with mine models.
•Developing and implementing blast movement and ore control programs with operations personnel and engineers, resulting in improved mining compliance and delivery of ores to process.
•Review assay results from the drill and sampling programs and input them into the database.
•Supporting geotechnical engineers in hazard maps and/or monitoring reports, identifying and managing geotechnical risks, and developing systems to monitor and manage these.
•Assisting the geotechnical engineer in collecting and analyzing geotechnical data, including investigating and analyzing failure events and ground control issues.
•Coordinating with Engineers for short-term planning and topography for the correct mining of blast materials, including generating structural, lithological, and geological maps and plans.
•Collecting and analyzing geotechnical data, including investigating and analyzing failure events and slope stability issues.
•Characterizing and classifying materials in the mine (essential separation between ore and pregrob (sulfides and carbon).
•Conducting soil or rock sampling programs.
•Conducting blasthole, pit, and outcrop mapping and data analysis for mine modeling, geologic interpretation, and mineral evaluation.
•Producing interpreted geological and mineralogical wireframes for resource estimation purposes.
•Executing accurate and timely reconciliation of all mining production monthly or as directed.
•Collecting and managing relevant data to a high-quality assurance and control standard.
•Developing and implementing blasthole sampling QAQC reporting.
•Developing and evaluating Grade Control models.
•Conducting in-pit mapping and data analysis for both mine modeling and geotechnical evaluation.
•Conducting blast monitoring concerning geological structures.
•Monitoring and evaluating geological, assay data, and sampling quality.
•Conducting Resource and mine production reconciliation studies.
•Supporting safety culture through various evolving programs such as Take 2, Critical Control Verification, Field Level Risk Assessments, Planned General Inspections, Leadership in the Field Interactions, and various permit-specific plans.
•Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:* Understand the principles and methods used in an open pit mining operation.
•Demonstrate basic skills in sampling, mapping, and logging (chips and core).
•Understand Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) processes and the ability to integrate and display all key data types in 2D and 3D.
•Able to prepare, monitor, and analyze mining plans and management of mineral stocks.
•Understand daily production tasks relating to geotechnical engineering, including mining and construction plans, blasting plans, waste dumps, documentation of inspections, and data collection, monitoring, and analysis.
•Able to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with stakeholders (Mine Ops., Survey, Engineering, and other departments) to achieve overall mine goals.
•Able to read, analyze, and interpret complex or diverse information.
•Able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
•Able to collect, analyze, and catalog scientific data.
•Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
•Understand Northern Nevada geology and mineral deposits.
•Possess a Remote Pilot License (FAA Part 107) or able to obtain one within 3 months of hire.
•Able to work outside in all weather conditions.
•Able to assess risk relative to occupational hazards and apply appropriate precautions and safeguards, demonstrating high safety leadership.
•Able to lift moderately heavy objects to 50 pounds.
Required Experience:* 1+ years of experience in an open pit hard rock mining or exploration environment preferred.
+ Candidates with more experience will be considered.
•Experience in using mining software preferred.
•University degree in Geosciences or Geological engineering.
•Demonstrate ability and experience using mine modeling software; MineSight and Leapfrog preferred. Handheld XRF, High precision GPS, Commercial drone operation, Pix4D, GIS, and CAD programs are helpful.
