CLASS TITLE: Motor Equipment Operator I


DEFINITION:

This is skilled motor vehicle operations work at the experienced level. An employee in this class with general supervision of the Superintendent of Public Works, Water and Wastewater, operates medium weight vehicles, performs road maintenance work an water/wastewater system repair. Performance is evaluated periodically based on observation of tasks performed, maintenance of equipment operated and attitude towards work. Positions in this class are determined to be “essential”, therefore, employees are required to work in emergency situations such as storms, floods and hurricanes.

Patching potholes, digging, raking and leveling, water and sewer line repairs, reading water meters, performing Miss Utility locates, Unclogging sewer mains and laterals, repairing water leaks, maintaining road signs

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Examples are illustrative only)

Operates four wheel drive and over five ton truck, power broom, power mower, power saw, backhoe, mini excavator, skid steer, mowing tractor, misc hand tools, misc sewer tools

Hauls sand, gravel, shells, and trash; plows snow, salts and sands roads; performs first echelon maintenance on assigned vehicle; cuts and trims bushes and trees to prevent visual obstruction; cleans ditches and culverts with shovel; covers trash and garbage at disposal site; flags traffic at construction site; assists in maintenance of roads; sweeps intersections; repairs damage to water and wastewater lines.

Performs other duties as assigned. Employees in this class are required to work out of doors during inclement weather.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the operation of trucks and the care of such trucks and diesel engines; traffic regulations of the State of Maryland; the safe operating limits of the operated equipment. Must be able to maintain the appearance of the assigned vehicle and perform minor maintenance functions such as changing oil, lubricating, servicing oil and air filters, changing tires, watching oil levels in gear cases and engines, replacing fuses and touching up paint. Should have knowledge of underground water and sewer lines for replacement and repairs.

Must be in sufficiently good health so as to be able to pass the departmental physical examination and to be willing and able to work outside under adverse weather conditions; must be willing and able to adhere to both written and oral instructions; have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations with fellow workers, supervisors, and the public.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Must be able to see, read and understand operator manuals for any equipment required to operate; see at night; hear normally; smell; speak to communicate with taxpayers; lift, pull and push 50 pounds; stand and sit for periods in excess of one hour; walk one mile; climb onto automotive equipment; bend to pick up and/or work on an item; determine if an item is hot, cold or slippery; grasp items; read and understand work orders and specifications; solve moderately difficult problems; write simple messages; work out of doors during inclement weather. Employees are essential and will be on call after hours and during emergencies.


MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a recognized high school or be in possession of a G.E.D. certificate; be able to read and write English; have one year of satisfactory paid employment in the operation of automotive farm equipment or trucks; must have experience with vehicles using pedal operated clutch and four speed manual selection, non-synchromesh transmission. Candidates will be tested in the performance and skill in operating motor vehicles equipped with pedal operated clutch and a four speed manual selection, non-synchromesh transmission.


REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

Employees must posses a valid Maryland Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License, with no more than Restriction “B” and Air Brakes, with a valid DOT physical card. Applicants may have no more than three points on their driver’s license.

Be at least 21 years old at time of appointment.

Have a telephone available for notification of emergency recall.

Pass a urinalysis test prior to appointment including no THC


Pass random drug tests including THC

Have transportation available to get to and from work.

Must maintain the ability to execute “Essential Functions” while in this class.

Must be on call every 3 weeks for 7 days, must be able to respond within one hour

Pay: $20.77 per hour
