•We will have openings on 2nd Shift (2:30P-11P) and 3rd Shift (10:30P-7A). Standard schedule is Monday through Friday. Excavator or material handler operator experience preferred.
•Operating the Shear Crane: The primary responsibility is to operate the crane to lift, move, and position heavy metal pieces, such as sheets, plates, billets, or bars, for cutting by a shear machine. This includes:
•Lifting and moving metal pieces to the machine bed or roller table.
•Positioning the workpiece accurately against guides and stops, or aligning layout lines under the shear blade.
•Operating the machine to clamp the workpiece and lower the blade to cut the metal.
•Operating and Setting up the Shear Machine: May also involve setting up and operating the shear machine itself, including adjusting the blade gap and tooling, and selecting appropriate feeds and speeds.
•Handling and Moving Materials: Loading, unloading, and moving materials within the shop or warehouse, potentially using other equipment like forklifts or side loaders.
•Reading and Interpreting Instructions: Reading and following instructions from production orders, blueprints, or designs to ensure accurate cutting and processing.
•Quality Control: Inspecting work, verifying dimensions, and ensuring the final product meets customer expectations.
•Maintenance and Safety: Performing daily inspections of the crane and shear machine, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and troubleshooting minor equipment problems.
•Teamwork and Communication: Working closely with other operators and team members to ensure smooth workflow and achieve production goals.
Required Skills:
•Crane Operation Skills: Experience and proficiency in operating overhead cranes and other lifting equipment.
•Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations, particularly concerning heavy equipment operation and working in potentially hazardous environments.
•Mechanical Aptitude: Understanding of mechanical systems and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance.
•Attention to Detail: Ability to work with precision and accurately follow instructions.
•Communication Skills: Effective communication, both verbal and potentially using hand signals, with supervisors and other workers.
•Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and address issues related to equipment or workflow.
•Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Work Environment: Steel mills can be challenging work environments due to:
•High Temperatures: Proximity to processes involving extreme heat.
•Heavy Loads: Handling and moving substantial weights.
•Vibrations and Shocks: Operating in an environment with heavy machinery.
•Corrosive Materials: Exposure to chemicals and gases.
•Dust and Debris: Presence of airborne particles from metal processing.
