• Prepare Revenue Metering planning and design estimates for transmission load customer, and generator interconnections.
• Develop and maintain technical standards, checklists, and engineering guidelines for meter implementation.
• Perform failure analysis on meters and auxiliary metering equipment.
• Design and implement communication solutions for complex meter installations (cellular, satellite, VPN).
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex telecom and metering issues in both office and field environments.
• Support the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of advanced meter telecommunications systems.
• Contribute to the integration and optimization of Distribution Automation (DA) and SCADA systems.
• Work with a variety of grid-connected devices, sensors, and communication technologies to support smart grid initiatives.
• Collaborate with engineering and IT teams to analyze device data, firmware performance, and network diagnostics.
• Safely design, review, and implement the installation of complex and smart revenue metering systems.
• Participate in technical forums and provide feedback on company-wide initiatives, regulatory framework, and metering strategies.
• Graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering discipline which is recognized by Canadian universities.
Engineering degrees in other disciplines may be considered if the candidate has the required level of applicable experience for this position.
• Minimum of eight (8) years relevant engineering experience, but applicants with less relevant experience may be considered at a lower-level position.
• Registered or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
• Must have and maintain a Class 5 Driver's License in good standing.
• Power Systems: Solid understanding and experience with electrical distribution and/or transmission systems.
• Telecommunications: Proficient in configuring, upgrading, and troubleshooting telecom equipment (e.g., modems, CGRs, routers). Familiarity with IP networks, fiber optics, cellular, and mesh communication technologies.
• SCADA & Control Systems: Strong grasp of SCADA integration, control schemes, and relay/control logic.
• Cybersecurity: Foundational understanding of cybersecurity principles as they apply to grid and telecom systems.
• Digital & Analytical Skills: Skilled in remote diagnostics, data analysis, and performance monitoring.
• Grid-connected devices: Experience with Distribution Automation devices, SCADA integration, and smart metering technologies.
• Familiarity or experience with federal measurement regulations (Measurement Canada) would be considered an asset.
• Resolve complex problems independently under areas of authority and within the identified guidelines, procedures, and standards.
• Drive initiatives, formulate plans and strategies. Engage internal and external stakeholders to promote an integrated long-term planning process.
• Maintain external relationships with vendors and suppliers.
• Conduct research looking for innovative creative and sustainable solutions which contribute to achieve the targets set by BC Hydro long term goals and corporate strategic directions.
• Think “big picture”, and understand the interdependencies between electrical, communication, and data systems.
• Provide technical leadership on planning and design issues.
• Well-developed leadership, planning, organizational, project management, problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Adaptability: quick to learn and apply new technologies to meet an evolving grid and telecom needs.
• Well-developed oral and written communication, presentation, leadership, relationship management and interpersonal skills.
• Change Management; acting as an advocate for innovation and supporting adoption of new tools and practices.
