To help facilitate our expanding business, RMS Energy is currently seeking an Apprentice Field Service Technician to join our dynamic and fast-growing team. This is a unique opportunity to further your experience working on electrical equipment in diverse locations across the United States, including power plants, hydroelectric dams, and other large industrial facilities. Our Apprentice Field Service Technicians primary role will be to support engineering projects and work closely with experienced Engineers a n d project managers. Assist in spearheading and executing comprehensive testing, maintenance, and repair activities for low and medium voltage circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, and various other electrical apparatuses. Their responsibilities extend to both shop environments and on-site field locations, ensuring operational reliability and safety across diverse settings. They will assist with diagnosing complex electrical issues, implementing corrective actions, and performing preventative maintenance to prolong the lifespan of critical equipment.

Responsibilities

Potential travel to customer sites to assist with inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and performing start-up procedures on low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems ranging from 480 Volts to 600 kV, ensuring comprehensive data collection and system analysis.
Assist with conducting detailed instrument transformer tests to verify accuracy and functionality.
Assist with power transformer testing, including Doble testing, Transformer Turns Ratio (TTR) testing, and Insulation Resistance testing to assess equipment condition and performance.
Help with testing and calibration of both electro-mechanical and solid-state relays to ensure precise operation and reliability.
Perform cable testing utilizing Tan Delta, Power Factor, Very Low Frequency (VLF), and DC Hi-Pot methods to detect and diagnose potential issues.
Troubleshoot and repair automatic transfer switches to guarantee seamless power transitions.
Conduct testing of Low, Medium, and High voltage switchgear and circuit breakers to confirm operational integrity.
Perform functional verifications of control circuits for switchgear and substation equipment, ensuring adherence to technical specifications.
Support moderately complex relay calibration and power metering to maintain accurate system monitoring.
Read, interpret, and follow technical drawings, schematics, and written work instructions/procedures to ensure precise execution of tasks.
Provide support to the Field Services team during shutdown, startup, and maintenance projects, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
Maintain a thorough understanding of safe work practices within the electrical industry, adhering strictly to all safety regulations and standards.
Assuming other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Currently pursuing a two-year technical college program in Electrical Power & Controls (EPC) or a degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred. Additional relevant experience will be considered in lieu of education.
Minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Prefer educational focus in the electrical field, Power Systems or Mechanical Engineering studies, with comprehensive knowledge of low, medium, and high voltage systems up to 500 kV.
Possessing NETA Certification (II, III, or IV) or a similar certification is desired, with an Electrician license being highly preferred.
Demonstrate proficient PC skills including Microsoft Office Suite to include email, internet navigation, data entry, and Excel.
Familiarity with reading, interpreting, and following complex technical drawings, schematics, and detailed written work instructions/procedures.
Demonstrates the ability to work safely, adhering strictly to all electrical safety procedures and protocols.
Demonstrates excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively communicate directly with customers and co-workers.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions

This job requires the ability to respond to 24/7 call outs and to work extended hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Work may be conducted outdoors in all weather conditions, near low-, medium-, and high-voltage equipment and heavy machinery, in areas with elevations in excess of 100 feet, and confined spaces adhering to strict safety protocols. Exposure to loud noises from machinery is common, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This job involves risk of electrical shock. This job requires frequent travel between RMS facilities and customer sites.


Physical Requirements

The position demands physical mobility to navigate uneven surfaces, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly, fine motor skills for handling small components and tools, and the capability to climb ladders and work at heights. Sustained physical effort, including standing, bending, pushing, digging, pulling, kneeling, crawling and reaching for extended periods, is required. Good vision, including color vision and depth perception, and the ability to hear alarms and communications in noisy environments are essential. Additionally, proficiency in speaking, hearing, reading, and typing in English is required for effective communication and documentation.
