JOB PURPOSE

The Chemist I will be responsible for conducting routine laboratory tests by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions. These tests will be performed on various laboratory systems used to generate compositional and isotope data from a wide range of sample types. The role may involve operating gas chromatography (GC) systems, isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) systems and their associated preparation processes, vacuum systems, liquid scintillation counters, and cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) laser systems. The position must be able to independently operate and maintain laboratory equipment while ensuring that all work is performed accurately and efficiently. They will be expected to collaborate with other analysts, follow directives from management and senior chemists, and ensure that all collected data meets the highest quality control (QC) standards. If any potential sources of error are identified, the Chemist I will consult with team members to address and resolve the issue. This position may require working with compressed gas samples and handling laboratory equipment both at the primary facility in Champaign and at satellite lab locations

Duties and Responsibilities

Take direction from management and senior chemists.
QC data and import into central database.
Operate laboratory equipment to generate compositional and isotopic measurements.
Maintain and calibrate equipment as required for safe and accurate use.
Work from home to correspond with technicians and operate equipment at satellite lab locations may be required.
May work with compressed gas samples.
Carry out work assignments to the highest quality level.
Perform various other duties and activities as assigned by supervisor within the physical constraints of the job.
Must understand and comply with all safety rules and company policies of Stratum.


Skills and Knowledge:


Essential

Knowledge of chemical processes and laboratory techniques
Instrument maintenance and troubleshooting techniques
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
Personal computer skills


Minimum Qualifications:


Essential

B.S. or MS Degree in Chemistry, Geochemistry, or related science field


Familiarity with Microsoft Excel.
