Position Overview:
As the Driver Training Supervisor, you will take a hands-on leadership role in guiding and developing our driving team to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant service delivery. Reporting to the Sr. Operations Manager, you will be the go-to expert for training and supporting drivers on various truck types, while also actively participating in route execution, site setups, and equipment maintenance. This position demands a practical problem-solver with strong safety focus and a commitment to operational excellence who thrives on mentoring others and ensuring smooth day-to-day field operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Driver Training and Development
•Lead hands-on training and retraining sessions for drivers on Roll-off, Front, Rear, and Side load trucks, strictly following safe work procedures.
•Assist with onboarding and orientation of new drivers and operational staff, ensuring thorough understanding of company policies, safety programs, and vehicle maintenance protocols.
•Conduct driver evaluations and provide detailed feedback on working interviews using standardized assessment templates.
•Support COR audit preparation and compliance by ensuring staff adhere to safety and operational standards.
Operational Execution and Support
•Collaborate with Operations Supervisors to maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the shop, vehicles, and equipment, fostering a safe and efficient working environment.
•Conduct daily pre-trip and safety inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure vehicles meet company standards for cleanliness and functionality.
Safety, Compliance, and Reporting
•Champion and enforce safe work habits, ensuring full compliance with company policies, Alberta Transportation Vehicle Safety regulations, and BluPlanet’s safety programs.
•Maintain accurate and up-to-date driver abstracts for the Field Staff, promptly reporting any vehicle defects, incidents, or violations to the Maintenance Manager.
•Identify, report, and assist in correcting workplace hazards, actively contributing to a safe working environment for all staff.
•Collaborate with the Operations Supervisor with incident investigations and related documentation.
Communication and Administration
•Maintain clear and professional communication with drivers, supervisors, and other stakeholders via email, phone, and in-person interactions.
Leadership and Continuous Improvement
•Provide proactive suggestions to improve route efficiency, operational processes, and safety protocols.
•Assist in coordinating end-of-day routines and tasks for drivers and driver assistants, ensuring smooth completion of unloading, cleaning, and vehicle maintenance duties.
•Support emergent or unforeseen operational issues as they arise, demonstrating flexibility and problem-solving skills to minimize disruptions.
•Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
Job Requirements:
•Minimum of 7 years driving experience, including at least 3 years in driver training or leadership roles.
•Valid Class 3 driver’s license required; Class 1 license preferred.
•Waste industry experience is a strong asset.
•Proven ability to safely operate large vehicles with demonstrated competence.
•Physical capability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs at waist height.
•Strong leadership qualities with excellent problem-solving skills.
•Proficient in basic computing, including Microsoft Excel, and familiar with Trux software.
•Experience with power tools and intermediate truck maintenance knowledge.
•Self-motivated and able to work independently while effectively prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
