About This Job


Summary


The Environmental Summer Student will perform environmental monitoring and sampling duties to maintain compliance with site permits and conserve environmental integrity. The successful candidate will also take part in various projects including reclamation, hydrological monitoring, environmental effects monitoring, and other environmental needs for the site.


The work term is from May 2025 to August 2025



Responsibilities


Conduct flow measurements in streams and weirs.
Install, maintain, and retrieve data from a network of hydrometric stations.
Complete water level and benchmark surveys using an automatic level and survey rod.
QA/QC, upload and share hydrometric data with site-teams and consultants.
Collect surface and groundwater samples from various sites which are accessed by foot, truck, boat and/ or ATV.
Ensure water, dust fall and partisol samples are handled correctly while in the field, packaged for shipping appropriately, and shipped to achieve prescribed hold times and temperatures.
Ensure field data (e.g., field sheets and notes) are recorded, scanned, and filed in the appropriate place and in a timely manner.
Complete reconnaissance sampling of potential water quality risks (e.g., seepage, ML/ARD, erosion, and sediment control) and any other monitoring tasks outlined in permits or site management plans.
Maintain and calibrate field instruments as set out per site SOPs and manufacturer recommendations.
Assist with wildlife monitoring programs, including wildlife camera and data management.
Maintain cleanliness of Environment Department vehicles, facilities, and equipment.
Respond to and document any spills, along with keeping the site spill/incident log current.
Implement erosion and sediment control best practices and progressive reclamation activities.
Operate pickup trucks, ATVs, boats and small engine equipment in a safe manner and in accordance with mine regulations.
Erosion and sediment control monitoring consisting of maintaining water retention and drainage structures to ensure capacity for runoff, as required.
Provide field support for other environmental monitoring programs and consultants as required.
Support in the planning and execution of various environmental initiatives.
Actively participate and engage with MTM's safety culture.




Education & Experience


Enrollment in, or completion of a university degree or college diploma in environmental science, environmental technology, fish and wildlife, environmental engineering, etc.
Previous experience in environmental monitoring, the resource sector, or industrial environments is considered an asset.
Able and willing to perform labor-intensive tasks, such as hiking or carrying heavy equipment to work sites in adverse weather conditions.
Valid Driver's License (Class 5 or equivalent).
Strong computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
First aid or other certificates considered an asset.
Basic knowledge of power equipment, electrical systems, and hand tools.

Strong attention to detail in data entry, equipment maintenance, and lab work.




Working Conditions


Work involves a camp-based role at the Mount Milligan Mine site with a set work schedule on a 14x14 work schedule, Tuesday to Monday, 12 hours per day.
The team is comprised of very energetic and dedicated professionals
Candidates must be able to maintain high levels of performance for extended shifts, up to 12 hours in duration
Operate pickup trucks, ATVs, and small engine equipment in a safe manner
Occasional exposure to hazardous environments with the requirement of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Bus transportation to and from site is provided free of charge from Prince George, Fort St. James, Mackenzie and Smithers.
Mount Milligan is a safety-sensitive environment and promotes a drug & alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a ZERO - TOLERANCE policy, with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs/paraphernalia on site
