The Automation Specialist is responsible for designing and implementing structured automation systems and controls to accelerate development time, reduce unplanned maintenance and overall complexity, improve user experience, and ensure compliance with governmental regulations, including Directive 17. This role oversees the architecture, integration, and execution of automation and SCADA systems within Veren’s Operational Technology (OT) platform and plays a key role in guiding SCADA system direction to align with business and regulatory requirements.

Additionally, this position includes project management responsibilities, ensuring the successful coordination of multiple internal and external stakeholders in the execution of automation projects on time and within budget.

Main Responsibilities & Activities:


System Architecture & Design:* Architect and design network, security, OT infrastructure, software and thin-client license structures, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) layers, database management, and master-subordinate architectures for SCADA systems.

Support the configuration of network load balancing systems to optimize application performance, evenly distribute workloads across servers, and minimize downtime.
Develop and implement documented controls to maintain system integrity, including OT network and server drawings, OEM layers, software and firmware version control, and lifecycle management.
Define and implement data flow strategies for efficient communication between SCADA and other enterprise systems.
Develop future-ready SCADA designs that prioritize adaptability for constant change, user experience, production, cost-effectiveness, scalability, security, and compliance.

Project Management & Stakeholder Coordination:* Lead and manage automation projects, ensuring alignment with Veren’s production and leak detection goals.

Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including Information Systems, Measurement, Integrity, Engineering, Production Operations, and third-party software/data vendors.
Develop project timelines, deliverables, and reporting structures to track automation initiatives effectively.
Oversee the implementation of best practices for change management, ensuring smooth transitions during software or firmware upgrades and system enhancements.
Facilitate cross-functional meetings to align automation strategies with business needs.

SCADA Systems Optimization & Maintenance:* Assist in the development of tools to monitor network security protocols and overall performance.

Drive continuous improvement and optimization of SCADA systems.
Maintain compliance with industry standards and government regulations, ensuring security and reliability in automation systems.
Develop and implement testing and deployment protocols for seamless software and firmware upgrades.
Coordinate the investigation and resolution of high-level SCADA system issues.
Oversee efficient onboarding/offboarding of automation systems during acquisitions and divestments.
Assist in the development and implementation of a preventative maintenance plan to maximize system uptime, enhance performance, and reduce unplanned downtime.
Research and evaluate new technologies to enhance SCADA, OT infrastructure, and automation efficiencies.
Support the implementation of an advanced data analytics interface to visualize and optimize SCADA data, enabling data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency improvements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:* Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering. A technical diploma in operations automation, oil and gas instrumentation or computer technology.

5+ years of experience overseeing the development, maintenance and support of network and server infrastructure environments.
Strong knowledge of firewall, networking and internet protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP, and distributed networks.
5+ years of experience in VTScada or other SCADA platforms.
Familiar with configuring load balancing systems to optimize network traffic across multiple thin-client servers.
Experience with Fortinet Networking products, AWS cloud and AWS Verified Access are an asset.
Strong background in SCADA integrations, with a focus on system architecture, design, and project execution management.
In-depth knowledge of network architecture, infrastructure, and database design in an automation setting.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate stakeholders across technical and business teams.
Strong understanding of change management principles, particularly in SCADA software updates and system integrations.
Highly organized and analytical, with strong attention to detail.
Demonstrated technical skills applicable at both corporate and field levels.
Excellent presentation and facilitation skills to communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
Team player with a strong desire to learn, contribute, and drive continuous improvement in automation practices.
Displays a positive attitude, resilience, and serves as a role model within the team.
Strong problem-solving skills with sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
